Hebrew School Happenings
2015-2016

Pesach preparations at the L.I.T.N. Hebrew School!

Morah Chayala's class - week of April 17th
Model Seder

Rabbi Becker joined us on Sunday and led the students and our parents in a model Seder. Everyone participated- asking questions, sharing insights and explanations and of course performing the steps of the "Seder". Highlights included eating Matzah, Maror (bitter herbs), the students reading from their own custom designed Haggadahs and a full "Seder" feast. One of the most exciting moments was when  the students "stole" and hid the Afikomen from Rabbi Becker resulting in prizes for all when he was unable to find it!
Morah Libby's class - week of April 17th
Here we are, making our Haggadahs and having a mini-Seder. We learned how the Jewish people suffered as slaves in Egypt - King Pharaoh ordered all the baby boys to be thrown into the river! Moshe's mother created a waterproof basket to put Baby Moshe in; he was saved and taken to live in the palace. When he grew up, he tried to help as many Jews as he could and was hurt to see the Jewish people suffering so much. HASHEM told Moshe to ask Pharaoh to let the Jewish people go, but Pharoah was stubborn and did not let them leave - until after the Ten Plagues! HASHEM had Moshe lead the Jews out of Egypt and through the sea.

We were amazed by the story of the miracles HASHEM performed to free us from slavery.
At our mini-Seder we had grape juice for Kiddush, and we ate Matzah. We also dipped a vegetable in salt water to remind us of the bitter tears that the Jewish people cried in Egypt. Everyone worked so hard on their Haggadahs - and they came out beautiful!

Happy Passover!

Post-Purim trip to Fay J. Lindner Residences at Gurwin Jewish
This past Sunday, March 27th, the L.I.T.N. Hebrew School visited the Fay J. Lindner residences at Gurwin Jewish for a Post-Purim event. The students' parents joined us for this special event and performance. The program began with the students meeting with the residents and handing out Shalach Manos packages and Purim cards that they prepared with Morah Chayala. This was followed by a short Purim themed skit performed by the students. The event concluded with music and singing led by Rabbi Becker on his guitar.

Purim focuses on joy and it's especially important to share the joy of Purim with others. The students felt great about the special Mitzvah they were doing, and both they and the residents had a wonderful time!

February News Report
We have made so much progress with Brachos! We moved on from “Borei Pri Ha’etz” to the Brachos on other types of foods, adding each Bracha to our Bracha books until we completed them all. We even got to sample a lot of the foods we discussed! I hope the children will use the Bracha books when they eat, and remember to thank Hashem for the food He gives us. We had a lot of fun playing Bracha Bingo: everyone called out the Bracha of the food that was chosen and was able to cover that food on their bingo board. A lot of kids won prizes each week! We also had fun playing "Headbands”: we each wore a picture of food on a headband, and had to ask questions to the class to help us guess what food we have and what Bracha we say. Check the pictures posted for this month to see all the fun we had!

We also learned the Hebrew names for many foods. Some of our favorites were duvdevan - cherry, itriyot - noodles, anavim - grapes andugah - cake.

Morah Chayala's Class

week of February 28
We learned about the different blessings we say at the end of Shabbos  during the Havdalah sevice. We had a great time filling our lemons with cloves to use as besamim(spices) for havdalah!! It took lots of work to cover all the yellow!

Morah Chayala's Class
We are really progressing in our reading and our understanding of the Hebrew Language! Some of us are reading Hebrew so fluently that we can even follow along with a siddur(prayer book) during our morning prayers.
We've learnt how to make nouns in singular/plural, matching proper nouns with proper adjectives, and we've finally reached  the Hebrew pronouns, The best feeling is when we recognize the Hebrew words we learned about in other areas like in our prayers!
This week we began talking about Shabbos and the many Mitzvos involved. How lucky we are to have a day off given just to rest and eat big meals!
Have a great weekend!

Special December report from Morah Libby

In honor of Chanukah, we learned the exciting story of how the Jews, led by Yehudah HaMacabee, fought off the great and powerful Greek armies of wicked King Antiochus.

We reenacted parts of the story, like the Jews studying Torah in hiding while pretending to play dreidel. Then we played a real game of dreidel together. We enjoyed lots of chocolate gelt and delicious jelly donuts. We even played Chanukah bingo with the chocolate gelt!

We have made great progress in Aleph Bais - we are up to the letter Yud!  I am so proud of everyone! We have come a long way, learning many letters and some vowels too. We can even read some words. This past week we used cut-out letters and vowels to make our own words, and then used the letters to make our own bingo boards. Great job reviewing your reading sheets!
Another important thing we learned was the mitzvah of Tzedakah - giving charity and helping others. We created our very own Tzedakah boxes out of Pringles cans. We had fun coloring them and can now use them to do the mitzvah!

Last week we traded in tickets for awesome prizes. Keep earning those tickets!

Looking forward to a lot more learning and fun!

Week of Dec. 20th
Morah Chayala's Class

On the tenth day of Teves, the Babylonian Emporer, Nebuchadnezzar, made a siege around Jerusalem which led to the burning of the Bais Hamikdash, our holy temple. We discussed how we long for the Bais Hamikdash to be rebuilt and every mitzvah(good deed) we do, specifically respecting and loving others, builds us another brick on the Bais Hamikdash.

To remind us of the wonder and glory in the times of the Bais Hamikdash, the students "built" 3-D pictures of the Bais Hamikdash!

Week of Dec. 13th
On Chanukah we celebrate two miracles: our victory over the mighty Greek empire and their efforts to destroy our Jewish way of life and the miracle of the one jug of oil burning for eight days. To remember the miracle of the oil, it is customary to eat foods fried in oil such as latkes and donuts.
The students had a great time filling and decorating their very own Chanukah donuts!

Week of Oct. 18th
The students have been learning about saying blessings and the importance of being thankful and appreciative for all that we have.
Through interactive activities, the students are becoming more fluent in which blessing to say for which food!

Sep. 27th
The 2015-2016 school year got off to a great start!

The day before the holiday of Sukkos  was a great day to start the year! The students discussed the purpose of a Succah, what it is all about, and how to build one. After visiting the synagogue's Succah, the students all got a chance to create their very own model Succahs too, and boy, did they make their accommodations comfortable (with couches and beds...)! They also got a chance to put together the 4 species and even practiced shaking them. Looking forward to hearing how the students enhanced their festival!
